The origins of Royal Ascot can be traced back to 1711 when Queen Anne first spotted the potential for a racecourse in the area during a carriage ride. The first race meeting, known as Her Majesty’s Plate, took place in August 1711 on what would later become the Ascot racecourse. Royal Ascot gained its “Royal” prefix in 1911 when King George IV officially granted the event the title of Royal Ascot. Since then, it has enjoyed the patronage of the British royal family.
